Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The island capital, a centre of commerce and public administration with a population of 220,000, does not seem particularly attractive at first glance. But once you have become accustomed to the big city atmosphere, you can discover all kinds of nice things. For example, the Plaza de la Candelaria has excellent opportunities for shopping and going out at night; you can find cafés and pubs for all tastes there. The largest shopping street of the island, Calle Castillo, starts above the square.
Those... interested in culture can look forward to a long day in the Antiguo Hospital Civil, because all city museums have been moved there to form one overall complex. The archeological and natural history departments are especially interesting, there are reproductions of burial sites with original mummies and showcases that document submarine life. A visit to the Museo de Bellas Artes, which has changing exhibitions of old and modern works, is also worth the effort. more
