After a good five years under construction, the first turbine in the Walchensee power plant in the municipality of Kochel started turning in 1924. Even today, it continues to be one of the largest pumped-storage power plants in Germany due to its capacity of 300 million kWh of electricity. The water flows downwards from Lake Walchen, which is at a higher altitude, via several approx. 1,480 ft (450 m) long pressure pipes and powers the turbines in the engine room.
