Basílica Santa María La Menor
The only Gothic cathedral of the New World was constructed between 1521 and 1540. The west tower has remained uncompleted due to the risk of hurricanes. In 1546, Pope Paul III elevated the church to Cathedral Primada de las Indias, which held authority over all churches of the New World. In 1586, it was plundered by the English pirate Francis Drake.
The grand façade on the west side, possibly created by Gil de Liendo, is kept in Spanish plateresco style, although influences of early Italian Renaissance...
