Royal Palace (Budavári Palota)

The largest building in the Castle district is the Royal Palace. It was built by the Habsburgs during the 18th century on top of the remnants of a medieval castle, and after 1945 it was reconstructed in a Baroque style and the classicistic dome added. It is situated on top of Castle Hill, the fortified upper part of the medieval city. The vacillating history of the Budapest city districts of Pest, Buda and Óbuda is documented by exhibitions in the History Museum which is located in the palace (http://www.btm.hu;... mid May-mid Sept daily 10 am-6 pm; March-mid May, mid Sept-Oct Mon, Wed-Sun 10 am-6 pm; Nov-Feb Mon, Wed-Sun 10 am-4 pm).
The palatial building also accommodates the National Gallery (http://www.mng.hu/en) displaying a collection of Hungarian art from the 10th century to modern times (Tue-Sun 10 am-6 pm). Most of the works are the result of donations from Hungarian noblemen. The National Library in the F wing of the castle also houses the Bibliotheca Corviniana from the 15th century. Beethoven performed his F major sonata in the Castle Theater (Mon-Fri 8 am-6 pm, Sat 9 am-1 pm). more
