Jordaan

Charming bars and cafés, flashy boutiques, curio shops and galleries in which simply everything is sold from art to kitsch, are characteristic of the Jordaan district. Alternative Amsterdam has mainly settled in this former workers' and immigrants' district. Apart from the Westerkerk (West Church) and Anne Frank Huis (Anne Frank's House) there are few sights of historical interest in Jordaan. On the other hand, it is an ideal place to find unusual gifts or simply stroll through the alleyways and... narrow streets.
Charming courtyards, lovingly designed gardens and peacefully dozing cats in the windows complete this idyllic picture. This district was completely renovated around 20 years ago. At the time Jordaan was at risk of sinking into the ground due to its unsound foundations. more
