On four floors, the museum in the heart of Vancouver keeps about 9,000 historic and contemporary works... within its over one-hundred-year-old walls. Paintings, photos and videos of Canadian artists from British Columbia – e.g. Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Stan Douglas and Rodney Graham – are the focus of the permanent exhibition, which is completed by the works of international artists, especially from the field of video art. Until 1939, the 21-story Marine Building was the highest construction of Vancouver. The office tower... is modeled on New York’s Empire State Building and is especially worth seeing for its Art Deco style. The entrance alone with its massive wooden doors and numerous wall decorations are impressive. And so is the interior: the wood-paneled walls are richly adorned, e.g. with pictures of all sorts of sea creatures and ships. By the way, the paneling consists of twelve different kinds of local timber. Copper covers the lusciously adorned elevator doors and the twelve zodiac signs grace the marble floor, which can be seen again after a renovation in 1989. more

The art of the First Nations of the region around Vancouver is diverse, fascinating and still alive.... Named after one of the most important artists of the local Haida people, Bill Ried, the museum wants to build understanding and appreciation for the contemporary Indian works of the area. Gold and silver jewelry created by Ried and a 28-ft-tall (8.5 m) bronze frieze are among the highlights. In addition, a nicely carved totem pole - the top of which shows a wasgo, a mythic animal of the Haida tribe - can be admired here. Those who have acquired taste for the exhibited artworks should not miss the museum shop selling jewelry and decoration. more
