The Hunterian Museum complex is an absolute must for every visitor to Glasgow. In addition to the personal... collection of the anatomy professor Dr William Hunter, after whom the museum is named, the facility also contains extensive exhibitions on anatomy and zoology as well as an art gallery. The showpiece of the museum is the reconstruction of the private rooms of architect, designer and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was born in Glasgow. On the whole the Hunterian Museum and the Art Gallery have more than a million exhibits under their roofs. These include important objects and gravestones from the times of the Roman invasion and from the first two hundred years AD. Also on show are more than 70,000 coins and medals, most of which Dr William Hunter collected towards the end of the 18th century. The museum also has valuable fossils, stones and minerals as well as more than 70 meteorites. In the gallery visitors will find 450 paintings and more than 40,000 other works - you would need several days to take a good look at all of them. One of the focuses is the work of painter James MacNeill Whistler (1834-1903). more

Nomen est omen: the Gallery of Modern Art, housed in an elegant neoclassical building, presents modern... art in a permanent exhibition and also in temporary exhibitions which are based on different themes. The gallery has sculptures and paintings from all over the world. Since its opening in 1996 the gallery, also simply called the GoMA, has become the second most visited contemporary art gallery outside London; mainly because of its strict quality standards. The bottom floor contains contemporary art from famous artists, such as John Byrne. Paintings and sculptures from Andy Goldsworthy are also popular. The exhibitions focus on social topics, which are often dealt with in a provocative manner. One particular eye-catcher is a statue of the queen in papier-mâché. It shows the monarch clothed in a dressing gown with curlers in her hair. more

Scotland's showcase project for the new millennium is ultra modern. While the focus is on science, the... Science Centre is also a museum with a hands-on character. On four floors young and older children as well as adults can try out the interactive exhibits to their heart's content and experience science close up and in a practical manner. For instance, visitors can give their face a new look with the help of a 3D scanner or, in a special chamber, see the direction that natural rays take. The complex also features an IMAX cinema and a planetarium. Here visitors are given information about the special features of the universe. And in the Virtual Science Theatre those who are interested can take a virtual three-dimensional journey through the world of molecules. But there is more - the 127 m (416 ft) high Glasgow Tower, where visitors reach the top in just two minutes in a lift that travels at 65 km/h (around 40 mph). From here you can get a spectacular view of Glasgow. more
